Beware scam aimed at fire safety
11/15/2008
Ukiah, CA - Area business owners are warned to beware of an out-of-town business soliciting high-priced fire extinguisher inspections.

Chuck Yates, Ukiah City Fire Marshal, said he has heard from three restaurants met by the bogus inspectors. He added that in one day the people claimed to be from Tarzana in one incident and from Chatsworth in another.

It is required that fire extinguishers kept at any business be inspected on a yearly basis. Hood systems in restaurants are due for inspections every 6 months.

Yates said he has been told by businesses that the person doing this said, the fire marshal sent me.' But Yates does not ask that any one company to do the inspections.

Persons conducting such inspections are required to be licensed, Yates said.

The Fort Bragg Fire Department stated that in the past it had also encountered similar scams on the coast.

City of Ukiah Fire Marshall Chuck Yates can be reached at 463-6264.
