Most people have never actually used a fire extinguisher. They've walked past one every day for years, but they've never pulled the pin. The first time shouldn't be the day there's a real fire in the building.

From our Paducah shop at 1333 N 8th St, we bring a small, controlled live fire to your property, and your people put it out themselves. They use the same kind of extinguisher that's installed on your walls. If you're looking for someone in Paducah who does live-fire training for real, that's what we do. More on our fire safety training company-wide.

What OSHA asks of a Paducah employer

If you've put extinguishers in your building for your people to use, OSHA expects you to teach them how. That means how to use one, and what the risks are of fighting a fire that's just getting started. The training is due when someone is hired, and again every year after that.

That's the short version. If you want the longer read on who has to be trained and when, it's there.

Why we use a real fire

OSHA doesn't require a live fire. We use one anyway, because watching a video doesn't teach your hands anything. Somebody can sit through a slideshow and still freeze when it counts. Once they've put out a real fire with their own hands, they remember how it went.

The extinguisher feels different when it's going off. It's louder than people expect, and it runs out faster. It's better to learn that on a training day than in a kitchen or on a shop floor. More on live-fire extinguisher training and why it sticks.

What a class looks like at your place

You don't have to send anybody across town. You pick a safe spot on your property, usually a parking lot or an open area out back, and we set up there.

We start by talking it through. The method is called PASS, which comes down to pulling the pin, aiming at the base of the fire, squeezing the handle, and sweeping side to side until it's out. Then everybody who needs the training steps up and does it on a real fire. We stay until each person has put one out. Nobody gets skipped because the group ran long.

If you'd like to set one up, call 1-800-348-9604 and tell us roughly how many people you have.

Who goes through it

Everybody who's expected to grab an extinguisher should go through it, not just a few people. That's managers and office staff, cooks, plant leads, maintenance crews, warehouse workers, and river crews.

Around Paducah we train people at churches, schools, restaurants, plants, and river terminals. From North 8th we also go out to Mayfield, Murray, Calvert City, Benton, and Metropolis, Illinois. For kitchens, the hood system is its own job; see kitchen hood suppression in Paducah.

Same extinguishers we inspect and service

Training is for your people. The extinguishers still need their yearly inspection. We inspect and service the same units your crew trains on, and one trip can cover both. Here's more on fire extinguisher service in Paducah.

We've been on North 8th since 1984, over 40 years, family-owned. We're 5-Star Rated on Google. Our techs are certified and licensed, and everybody is ICC certified and factory trained.

Paducah questions

Does OSHA require extinguisher training for our employees?
If you've provided extinguishers for your people to use, yes. They need it when they're hired and every year after.
Do we have to send people somewhere for the class?
No. We come to you and set up on your property.
Does training take the place of extinguisher inspection?
No. Training is for your people, and the extinguishers still need their yearly inspection. We do both, and they can go on the same calendar.
