Fire Extinguisher Inspection and Service in Paducah, KY
You shouldn't have to keep the date. We do.
Most people look at a fire extinguisher, see the date is current, and figure they're covered. Fair enough — if you don't work this trade, you don't know what else to look for.
Here's what else there is. This is what a visit out of our Paducah shop looks like.

Here's what happens when we walk in
We don't glance at the wall and leave. Every extinguisher gets picked up, looked over, and inspected and serviced. The place keeps running while we do it.
On each one, the tech checks that:
- The pin and tamper seal are there and not broken.
- The gauge reads in the green. CO2 units don't have a gauge, so they get weighed.
- The hose and nozzle are clear. Dirt daubers love a nozzle.
- The cylinder isn't dented, rusted, or leaking.
- The label's readable and faces out.
- It's hung where it belongs, at the right height, with nothing stacked in front of it.
- It's the right extinguisher for what's around it.
If one is due for its 6-year maintenance or a hydro test, we pull it. We carry loaner extinguishers on the truck. If pulling one would leave a spot empty, a loaner goes up in its place until yours comes back.
The 6-year job is where people cut corners
When 6-year work is due, here's the job. Discharge the extinguisher. Take the valve off. Look inside the cylinder. Replace the valve stem O-ring. Put in new agent. Recharge it.
Then a new verification collar ring goes on under the valve. That ring can only go on with the valve off. So if it's there and it's whole, somebody did the work.
If it's missing, cut and taped back together, or stretched over the handle, ask questions. We've seen all three. And skipping the work doesn't make it cheaper. It usually costs the same.
If one gets used, call us
Maybe somebody grabbed it for a fire in the break room, or knocked the pin out with a pallet jack. Either way, that extinguisher is out of service until it's recharged or replaced. Don't hang it back up.
We recharge on site when we can. After a recharge, look for a new verification collar ring under the valve. The shop's open Monday through Friday, 8 to 5. After-hours emergency service is available.
Down on the river
Paducah sits where the Tennessee River runs into the Ohio. A lot of this town works on the water. Towboats, barge fleeting, shipyards, and terminals along the bank.
Extinguishers on a boat have a hard life. Engine room heat, damp air, and vibration all day. Brackets work loose. Gauges fog over. Cylinders rust from the bottom up where water sits. We meet the boat and inspect and service what's on board. That's our river and marine work.
Plants, downtown, and out on Hinkleville Road
The plants around Paducah and down the river toward Calvert City have hazards a plain ABC doesn't cover well. Flammable liquids. Dust. Electrical rooms. Hydraulic oil. We match the extinguisher to the hazard. When a handheld isn't enough, we match the system to the hazard. That's suppression.
Downtown and Lower Town are old buildings with restaurants, galleries, and shops in them. Back stairs, basements, upstairs storage. An extinguisher has to be close enough to reach from wherever a fire starts. Restaurants need a Class K by the cook line, and the hood system over it gets serviced on its own schedule.

Who's looking the other eleven months?
Our visit is once a year. The other eleven months still count. In between, somebody should look at every extinguisher once a month. Your people can do that, or we can walk it for you.
What you've got when we leave

Paducah questions
- Can you do recharges and hydro testing on the same visit?
- Recharges, usually. We do them on site when we can. A hydro test means the cylinder goes to the shop to be tested, then comes back. A loaner hangs in that spot until it's back.
