You shouldn’t have to keep the date. We do.
Most people look at a fire extinguisher, see a current inspection tag, and figure they’re covered. Fair enough — if you don’t work in this trade, you don’t know what else to look for. You’re counting on the fire protection company to do the right thing — and you should be able to trust your fire protection company.
That’s a lot like taking your car in for an oil change.
A bad shop can charge you about the same money and only swap the little sticker on the windshield that says come back in 3,000 miles. A good shop drains the oil, changes the filter, puts fresh oil in, then puts the sticker on. Same sticker either way. Only one of those cars got an oil change.
Fire extinguisher inspection and service works the same way.
When the manufacturer’s required maintenance is due — 6-year work, not a standard annual inspection — the right path is pull the unit, take it to the truck, discharge it, do the internal inspection, replace the valve stem and O-ring, put new agent in, and recharge it. The proof is not the tag hanging on the extinguisher. The proof is a verification collar ring around the neck of the valve. That collar ring only goes on one way: by discharging the extinguisher and removing the valve.
Cutting corners looks like a tag-only pass: hang a fresh tag and leave. Skip the discharge. Skip the internal work. Skip the collar. Price is not the tell — that shortcut can still cost full price, and typically does. We have also seen stretched collar rings forced over the handle, or collar rings that were cut and taped back on — a clear indication the work was not done properly.
Both paths can leave you with a brand-new tag. A tag does not mean the extinguisher will work when you need it. Same story when hydrostatic testing is due — a fresh tag alone is not proof the cylinder got what it needed.
That’s why you hire a service provider for fire extinguisher inspection near you: they should know what the work actually is, and have the integrity to do it correctly — not just leave something that looks current on the wall.
