We catch the boat on the river, so it doesn’t have to stop for us.
A towboat can’t pull off the river for a service call. It runs on a schedule set by the tow, the locks, and the water. So we go to it. Most of the time we catch a ride out and get on the boat while it’s working. When that doesn’t fit, we meet you at the dock, the fleeting area, or the lock.
We work towboats on the Ohio, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Cumberland. We inspect and service everything on board that’s due before we leave the boat. We keep the due dates. You don’t have to think about them.
What we service on board
- Extinguishers. Every one on the boat, from the wheelhouse to the engine room. Our trucks carry loaners. If an extinguisher has to come back to the shop, a loaner goes up in its place until yours is back.
- The galley hood system. It gets the same service as a restaurant kitchen hood: new links, clear nozzles, and a trip test.
- The engine room system. The suppression system already in the engine room gets inspected and serviced, so it’s ready if a fire starts down there.
- Alarms and emergency lights. We test them so the crew hears the alarm and can see the way out if the power goes.
How a visit goes
- You tell us where the boat will be and when.
- We catch a ride out to the boat, or meet it at the dock, the fleeting area, or the lock.
- We work through everything on board that’s due.
- We leave a report before we get off the boat.

- Do we have to bring the boat in?
- No. Most of the time we catch a ride out to the boat. We can also meet it at the dock, the fleeting area, or the lock.
- Can you do everything on one visit?
- Yes. That means the extinguishers, alarms, lights, galley, and engine room, whatever’s due.
- Can you take over from the company we use now?
- Yes. We’ll go through the boat, tell you what shape everything’s in, and put it on your calendar.
