You shouldn't have to keep the date. We do.

Yes, a used fire extinguisher can be refilled. We call it a recharge, and once it's recharged, it can go back on the wall. Any use at all means it needs one, even a quick squeeze to see if it works.

If you've just used one, call 1-800-348-9604. Our 24-hour service covers discharged units and emergency replacements, so you're not left with an empty spot on the wall overnight.

If you just used one (or the gauge is low)

A used extinguisher is out of service until it's recharged or replaced. It doesn't matter whether it was a small fire, a broken pin, or somebody testing it. A gauge out of the green gets the same answer.

  • Take it off the wall and set it aside as out of service.
  • Don't put it back up, even if it still feels heavy.
  • Call us at 1-800-348-9604.
  • If it has to go to the shop, we'll put a loaner up in its place.

People ask whether they can refill one themselves. Here's why we'd rather you didn't.

What a recharge actually is

A recharge is more than topping it off. The extinguisher is emptied and checked, then refilled with the right agent and brought back up to pressure. After a recharge or maintenance, you'll see a new verification collar ring at the neck of the valve. That ring is how you know the work was actually done. You also get a report from the visit. More on what good service looks like.

Recharging makes sense when the cylinder is still good. If it's not worth recharging, we'll tell you. When testing and recharging an older unit costs close to what a new one does, a new one is usually the better buy.

On site or back to the shop

We recharge on site when we can. When an extinguisher has to ride back to the shop, our trucks carry loaners, and a loaner goes up in its spot until yours comes back. You're covered either way.

When it's due for six-year work or a hydro test

A recharge visit is also when we check the dates on the cylinder. Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers get six-year maintenance, where the unit is discharged and gets an internal examination before it's recharged. On the regular visit we check every extinguisher and pull the ones due for maintenance, recharge, or a hydro test.

Hydrostatic testing comes up every five or twelve years, depending on the type of extinguisher. A cylinder that fails the test doesn't get refilled and put back on the wall. It comes out of service and gets replaced. More on hydro testing.

If you have a few units that have been used or are coming due, give us a call and we'll work them into one trip.
