Big buildings, lots of extinguishers

A lot of Evansville accounts are big. A plant, a hospital, or a campus can have extinguishers in the hundreds. Here's how that kind of visit goes.

Before we start, tell us which areas are off-limits and when. We plan the walk around that.

Then every extinguisher gets inspected and serviced. Pin and seal. Gauge. Hose and nozzle. The cylinder itself. How it's hung, and whether anything's blocking it. Whether it's the right type for what's around it.

Anything due for 6-year maintenance or a hydro test gets pulled. We leave a spare or a plan so the floor isn't missing coverage while it's out. Plants on the west side, warehouses up north

Evansville makes things. Plastics and packaging. Chemicals. Aluminum. Auto parts. There's old industry along Pigeon Creek on the west side, plants along the river, and warehouses and truck yards out US 41 on the north side.

Those floors don't all need the same extinguisher. A room full of flammable liquids needs one rated for it. An electrical room needs one that won't blow powder into the equipment. A dusty process area has its own problems. We match the extinguisher to the hazard. When the hazard is more than a handheld can cover, we match the system to the hazard.

Hospitals don't close so we can work

Evansville has two big hospital systems, a medical school campus, and two universities. That's extinguishers in every hallway, lab, kitchen, and mechanical room.

You can't clear a patient floor for us, so we don't ask. Tell us what's off-limits and when, and we'll work the building around it.

Down by the river, and out east

Downtown along the river there's a casino and plenty of restaurants and bars. There are more restaurants out on the east side.

A kitchen needs a Class K by the cook line and an ABC for the rest of the room. Behind a bar, the extinguisher tends to end up under a stack of cases. We move it back where somebody can grab it, and we tell you why it matters.

The hood system over the cook line is its own job. We do that too. That's UL 300 kitchen suppression.

Indiana has its own rules

Indiana has its own fire code and its own state fire marshal. Portable extinguishers follow NFPA 10. At work, OSHA has a say too. We leave a report that works for your inspector and your compliance file.

The monthly check

We're there once a year. In between, somebody should look at every extinguisher once a month. Your people can do that, or we can walk it for you.
