First-Line technician checking the valve on two red fire extinguishers in the shop

We work Metropolis out of our Paducah shop on North 8th Street, on the other side of the Ohio River. We've been family-owned since 1984.

Metropolis is the county seat of Massac County, and it sits on the north bank of the Ohio River with McCracken County, Kentucky, right across the water. Most of what we do here is everyday work for churches, auto and truck shops, banks and offices, clubs and lodges, restaurants, and stores. Here's what those places need from us and how we take care of it.

Our techs are certified and licensed, and they come in a company truck and in uniform. We're licensed and fully insured. Your doors stay open while we inspect. We leave a report.

In Metropolis it starts with the extinguishers. Every one gets its yearly inspection, and when one needs a recharge or a hydro test, we take care of that too. When an extinguisher is past saving or it's the wrong kind for the room, we'll tell you and get you the right one. A church fellowship hall, a body shop, and a bank lobby don't need the same thing, so we match the extinguisher to the hazard.

The auto shops, tire shops, and trucking outfits around town work with fuel, oil, and solvents all day. Their extinguishers get knocked around and covered in grime, and they still need their inspection like any other. They also have to stay where somebody can grab one, not behind a parked truck or a stack of tires.

Down on the river there's a coal terminal, and the heavy equipment there carries vehicle suppression systems of its own. When a handheld isn't enough for a machine like that, the system on the machine has to work, and we service those too. If a building or a process needs more than a handheld, that's a suppression system.

The hospital, the clinics, and the utility sites around town all have rooms full of electronics, and some of those rooms can't take water or powder. In the server rooms, the extinguisher should be a clean agent like Cleanguard+. It won't damage the equipment, and the bigger sizes carry an A rating, so they also cover the paper, wood, and plastic in the room. By the electrical panels, CO2 is a good fit. It isn't the pick for the server racks, though, because the cold discharge can thermal-shock sensitive electronics. Both still need their yearly inspection like every other extinguisher in the building.

A commercial cook line needs a hood system over it, and in Metropolis that runs from the fast-food places and gas station kitchens to the hospital kitchen. We service hood systems every six months, and we can work while the kitchen is cooking. The ABC extinguishers around a building work on grease, but a commercial cook line also gets a Class K, and we look after that one too.

Churches, banks, and the bigger public buildings have exit signs and emergency lights, and every one of them has to come on when the power goes out. When we inspect, we run the full 90-minute battery test on every one, along with the extinguishers. If you've got sprinklers, we handle those through a sprinkler company we work with.

We do more than extinguishers, too. We inspect, test, service, and repair fire alarm systems, and we put in new ones. We also put in security systems and cameras. In Metropolis that might be a grocery store that wants cameras on the registers and the lot, a nonprofit office that wants an alarm on the doors, or an industrial site that needs a new fire alarm put in. We can set up monitoring on your security system and your fire alarm, so somebody is watching when the building's empty. Monitoring doesn't cover the cameras. It's one company and one number for all of it.

Wherever you are, we recharge on site when we can. Our trucks carry loaners. If an extinguisher has to come back to the shop, a loaner goes up in its place until yours is back. Employees get extinguisher training when they start and every year after that, and we can do that training for you. If something gets discharged or a system goes off, our 24-hour service is there day or night.

Who we work for in Metropolis

We work for businesses all over Metropolis, and here are a few of them. At AEP's Cook Coal Terminal, we service the suppression systems on the equipment, we put in the fire alarm system and monitor it, and we keep up the extinguishers. We take care of the kitchen hood system, the exit lights, and the extinguishers at McDonald's. At Big John, we handle the extinguishers along with security and fire alarm work. City National Bank and St. Rose of Lima have us on their extinguishers and exit lights.

Towns around Metropolis

On the Illinois side we also work Brookport, Joppa, Vienna, and Golconda. Across the river is Paducah, where the shop is, and the Paducah crew also covers Calvert City and Benton. Up I-24, Marion, Illinois is worked out of Paducah too.

Compliance

Portable extinguishers follow NFPA 10, the national standard for extinguishers. We also work to OSHA and to what your local fire marshal wants to see, and the report stays with the site.

In Illinois, the Office of the State Fire Marshal licenses the companies and the people who service fire extinguishers, and the people who work on kitchen hood systems carry a license of their own. Our Paducah shop and the techs who work Illinois hold those State Fire Marshal licenses. The fire marshal has the final say on what your building needs.

Metropolis questions

Which shop takes care of Metropolis?
Our Paducah shop at 1333 N 8th St in Paducah, Kentucky, family-owned since 1984. You never have to haul anything across the bridge, because the truck and the tech come to you. Here's what a visit covers on our fire extinguisher service page.
We're in Illinois and the shop is in Kentucky. Does that matter?
Not to us. We work to NFPA 10, the national standard for extinguishers, and to what your local fire marshal wants to see, on either side of the river.
We only have a few extinguishers. Is that worth a trip?
Yes. Plenty of the places we take care of in Metropolis have just a few extinguishers on the wall. We'd be glad to add you.
